Carmen reached the bakery before sunrise. Lucía, the new baker, was already there, flour to her elbows, her phone propped against the mixer with CarmenBot's answer on the screen.
“That chair is Mamá's. Nobody sits there.”
The bot had found the words “Mamá's chair” in dozens of Carmen's texts. So it knew. Partly.

The chair was her mother's. For the bakery's first eleven years, her mother sat there every morning with her coffee, watching Carmen shape dough and correcting her before Carmen knew she had made a mistake. That is how her mother’s wisdom reached her: one morning at a time, while both of them were at the ovens.
Then her mother moved to Arizona, took up pickleball, and now texts Carmen her scores. She wins more often than she admits.
The Part Ten Years of Texts Missed
CarmenBot knew who the chair belonged to. It had no way to know why Carmen kept it empty. She was saving it for the person she would teach the way her mother taught her.
For three weeks Carmen had watched Lucía question the bot's answers and ask why, over and over. She made up her mind before she finished her coffee.
